A LONG AND DRAMATIC ROTARY WING MISSION
The region of California was once again hit by one of the most devastating wild fi res in the history of the United States of America. Over the space of just under two months, over 150,000 hectares were destroyed with several fatalities and a large number of people who lost their homes. This was also show time once again for rotary wing aircraft. Anything that had blades and could fl y was mobilized and took off in order to help fi ght the fi res. Besides the 747 Super tanker, small helicopters normally used for crop spraying were adapted for this life saving mission. Countless rotations of taking on water from lakes, private swimming pools and sometimes even from the sea, stretched both man and machine to their very limits.

Fighting fires in the wildfi re season, which runs alongside the daily business, is one of the key focus areas of west coast based helicopter operators. Their holy grail is to be contracted by the US Ministry of Agriculture, which is the institution who is governmentally responsible for fi ghting wildfi res. There are different contract models; the best choice is a permanent engagement for fi ve years at the longest, which allows an operator to have a helicopter in good condition ready for the call. The minimum payload demanded for fi ghting fi res is 1,200 kg, which includes light type helicopters of around 3 tons maximum weight.

In the heavy section we talk about Chinooks and even the Erickson air crane. These operators don't equip their aircraft with bambi buckets but with huge internal tanks – and charge more than 20,000 Dollars per day that they're engaged and more than 7,000 Dollars per fl ight hour on top of that. The civil and nature protection system of the USA has no choice other than to rely on the most versatile aircraft ever invented: The Helicopter.
