Thirty years ago, when I was honored to be the Chairman of the Inter - national Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), we began discussing the possibility of holding trade and exhibition shows outside of the United States.

It almost sounded like a panacea for the foreigners who travelled to the November exhibition and trade show that we constantly moved around the United States. We felt if we could establish an IAAPA show in Europe, it would achieve several goals, such as really establishing our International Association of Amuse ment Parks and Attractions as not just an American theme park association, but truly an international association. During that time period, we were just that American association with an international name. It was a large expectation to accomplish.

I remember at that point in time, we added our first Asian board member, Kazuo Yamada, chair of the Hanayashiki Amusement Park in Tokyo, Japan. Hanaya shiki, as Mr. Yamada would say, “is the world’s smallest amusement park at 1 ¼ acres, BUT, most efficient.” I can attest that it was a wonder ful park in the heart of Tokyo located in the Asakusa area. Mr. Yamada spoke no English and brought an interpreter to the IAAPA board to listen and speak for him. That was the extent of our Asian IAAPA board participation!

Europe was not that well re - presented either, considering the number of attractions that be - longed to the association at that time from greater Europe. Well, times did change, and our longrange plan to grow international memberships, both in Europe and in Asia, came true. Last year at the Amsterdam exhibition, over 15,000 participants came to the show. 11,500 buyers were presented with over 15,132 square meters of exhibition space and over 570 exhibiting companies. People from over 112 countries represented a truly first rate showing and participa - tion. Remember, IAAPA only took over the show in 2005, a short 14 years ago!

By expanding the IAAPA show internationally, it opened the opport - unity for thousands of additional industry people to attend our IAAPA show that could not otherwise afford to attend due to distance and cost. Asia has seen the same magnificent growth in an even shorter time frame. This last year, over 9,000 people attended the Hong Kong Asian IAAPA. In my opinion, if Asia stays on the growth track that it is currently experiencing, it may possibly eclipse the United States show in the next 10 years. But I add, that remains to be seen. A lot more Asian expansion must occur for that to happen. Asia member ship as part of IAAPA, now represents a total of 633, the EMEA 1516, Latin America 417, and North America 3561. The interesting percentages to note are that North America is 58% of total membership, Latin America is 7%, the EMEA region is at 25%, and Asia Pacific is at 10%. This is a stark contrast of growth from 30 years ago when practical ly all membership was North American. Today, 42% of member ships are international. A long-range plan came true, which well serves the global industry and its phenomenal growth!
