Music is everywhere in the US. It’s playing on your sound system at home, on your car radio as you drive to work, and on your earphones as you fall asleep at night. America is the biggest music market in the world. It generated almost $6 billion of the $17.3 billion that the recording industry made in 2017. And that figure is growing, thanks mostly to on-demand streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, which are either free, paid or “freemium,” which means that users can listen for free or pay a subscription fee for a better service.

The Recording Industry Association of America found that in the first half of 2018, streaming made $3.4 billion in the US, mostly from paid subscriptions. This accounted for 75 percent of the money generated by the recording industry — ...
